Strengthening the Bond: India and Maldives’ Unwavering Friendship in the Face of False Allegations

January 03, 2025 Ahmed Adeeb and Prof Srinivasan Balakrishnan
In the wake of a recent Washington Post article alleging that India sought to interfere in the political landscape of the Maldives, including an accusation of planning to overthrow President Muizzu, I feel compelled to address these claims and reaffirm the longstanding, unshakeable friendship between India and the Maldives. As a former Vice President of the Maldives, I have had the privilege of observing first-hand the nature of our bilateral relations, and I can categorically say that the accusations presented in the report are not only baseless but also entirely contrary to the manner in which India engages with its neighbours.
A False Narrative: Dismissing the Allegations
The allegations made in the Washington Post article are deeply speculative and provide a distorted view of the true state of affairs between India and the Maldives. As a nation, we understand that politics is a competitive field, and opposition groups will always seek ways to regain power, as is the case in any democracy. However, to assert that India was involved in a covert operation to destabilize the Maldivian government is not only unfounded but misrepresents India’s foreign policy stance.
India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has always adhered to a policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries. This approach is evident in the way India has managed its diplomatic relations, particularly with neighbouring countries such as the Maldives. India’s foreign policy is rooted in respect for sovereignty, and there is no credible evidence to suggest any deviation from this principle. The report in question fails to recognize this, instead weaving a narrative of conspiracy that bears no resemblance to reality.
The Maldives’ Partnership with India: A Pillar of Support
India has been a steadfast partner to the Maldives, especially during difficult times. In 2018, when the Maldives faced a severe financial crisis, it was India that extended a lifeline, helping the nation avert a potential sovereign default. The Indian government’s support in providing financial aid and facilitating key economic reforms was crucial in stabilizing the Maldivian economy. These actions highlight India’s commitment to the welfare of the Maldives, and this support has only strengthened the bonds of friendship between our two nations.
Furthermore, the bilateral cooperation between India and the Maldives has extended far beyond economic matters. The two countries share a deep cultural, historical, and strategic connection, with strong people-to-people ties. India has consistently been a valuable partner in addressing the Maldives’ security concerns, promoting peace and stability in the region.
Refuting the Propaganda: The Non-Interference Principle
Prof. Srinivasan Balakrishnan, Director of Strategic Engagements and Partnerships at Indic Researchers Forum (IRF), has also voiced his concerns about the misinformation propagated by such news articles. He has categorically refuted the false narrative that India was involved in any attempt to overthrow the Maldivian government. Prof. Balakrishnan rightly emphasizes that India’s foreign policy is rooted in mutual respect and non-interference, principles that have been steadfastly upheld in India’s dealings with its neighbours.
India’s diplomatic stance is clear: it seeks to foster peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through collaboration rather than confrontation. Allegations of interference in the internal political affairs of the Maldives are not only false but also dangerous, as they attempt to sow discord in a relationship that has been a source of stability in the Indian Ocean region.
The Path Forward: Strengthening India-Maldives Relations
It is imperative that we do not let false reports or baseless allegations cloud the constructive dialogue that has flourished between India and the Maldives. As we move forward into 2025, it is essential to focus on the many areas of cooperation that exist between our nations. From trade and investment to climate change, security, and cultural exchange, there is so much potential to build on the strong foundation that India and the Maldives share.
Further Prof Balakrishnan added, the friendship between India and the Maldives remains a cornerstone of our Neighbourhood first foreign policy. Despite the efforts of certain groups to create division, I am confident that the people of both nations will continue to support and cherish the bond that has stood the test of time. India has always been a trusted friend and partner to the Maldives, and I believe that this relationship will only continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
President of Maldives Third-way democrats (MTD) Mr Ahmed Adeeb said as a nation, the Maldives must continue to embrace its democratic processes while recognizing the unwavering support it has received from India. The false propaganda pushed by certain media outlets will not deter us from pursuing a future of mutual respect, collaboration, and shared prosperity. Let us move forward with optimism, with a clear understanding that India’s commitment to the Maldives is not one of interference, but one of partnership, friendship, and solidarity.
